Rwanda Rulindo, Cocatu Co-Op

The Cocatu Cooperative is one of the only surviving coffee organizations that remains in Rulindo after a period where many were formed but few truly prospered. The absence of widespread business knowledge in the region made it a struggle for many cooperatives to pay for their harvests year after year without incurring large debt, and failing to adequately redistribute income to farmers. The Cocatu Cooperative has been fortunate though to have a steady buyer for their coffee 5 years in a row, which has stabilized the cash flow of the organization and allowed farmers to finance their harvests without debt. The importer we purchased this coffee from has been providing high prices for this exceptional lot year after year, not as charity, but because it is a phenomenal product from a region that is just on the cusp of true stability.

In the cup, this coffee showcases everything that Rwandan coffee can be. Bright, effervescent acidity displays the high altitude, while vegetal tones like tomato skin, crushed ivy and pine nut ground it to a richer profile. A clean, balanced finish indicates the exceptional care that was taken during harvest and processing. We’re proud to offer this coffee for the extremely limited time we will have it, and hope to offer it again through this same partnership for years to come.
